Everything you need to know before your first physio visit

Walking into any healthcare appointment for the first time can feel a bit daunting, and physiotherapy is no exception. Perhaps you have been dealing with pain for weeks or months, or maybe you have just had surgery and are not sure what recovery will involve. Whatever brought you here, knowing what to expect can help ease those first-visit nerves and ensure you get the most from your time with us.

Many of our patients tell us they wish they had known a few things before their first appointment. Consider this your insider guide to feeling prepared and confident.

Before Your Appointment

The night before or morning of your visit, gather a few items that will help your physiotherapist understand your situation. Bring your health insurance card and identification, along with a list of any medications you are currently taking. If you have had any imaging done—X-rays, MRIs, or ultrasounds—bring those reports if you have them. They provide valuable information, though they are not essential if you cannot locate them.

Most importantly, take a moment to jot down your questions and concerns. It is easy to forget what you wanted to ask once you are in the room, and having notes ensures you cover everything that matters to you.

When choosing what to wear, think about comfort and accessibility. Loose, stretchy clothing that allows your physiotherapist to see and work with the affected area works best. For lower body concerns, shorts are ideal. For shoulder or neck issues, a tank top or loose t-shirt helps us assess your movement properly.

During Your Appointment

Your first session focuses primarily on understanding you and your condition. This initial assessment typically takes 30-45 minutes and forms the foundation for your entire treatment journey.

We will start by discussing your symptoms—when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life. This conversation helps us understand not just your pain, but how it impacts the activities that matter most to you. We want to know your goals, whether that is returning to a sport, playing with your grandchildren, or simply sitting through a workday without discomfort.

The physical examination involves testing your range of motion, strength, and how you move through various activities. This hands-on assessment helps us pinpoint exactly what is happening in your body. Afterward, we will explain our findings in plain language and discuss what they mean for your recovery.

Your Treatment Plan

Based on everything we learn during your assessment, your physiotherapist creates a personalized plan designed specifically for you. This typically includes hands-on manual therapy to improve mobility, therapeutic exercises to build strength and stability, and education to help you understand your condition and prevent future problems. You will leave with clear guidance on what to do at home between sessions.

Tips for a Successful First Visit

Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete any paperwork without feeling rushed. During your appointment, be honest about your pain levels and limitations—we need accurate information to help you effectively. Ask questions whenever something is unclear, and take notes on your home exercises so you remember them later.

What Happens Next

Most conditions benefit from multiple sessions, and your physiotherapist will recommend a treatment frequency based on your specific needs—typically one to three times per week initially. As you improve, visits often become less frequent until you are ready to manage independently.
